Who is the Undergardener?
My name is Deborah Mason, in 2018 I moved to Maidenhead to look after my elderly mother. I work as an artist and my gardening business supplements my always precarious income from creative endeavours! I have experience of working on my own, my family’s and friends’ gardens and I have recently taken on an allotment to improve my skills in vegetable and fruit growing. I’m not a tree surgeon or a landscape gardener or a garden designer. I’m just someone who knows a bit about gardening and knows that having someone to help with the ‘boring’ bits is often all a keen gardener needs. That said I’m happy to work alongside gardeners who are just getting started and chip in with what skills and advice I can give to help them to get the garden they want.
I recently completed and passed the RHS Level 2 Practical Horticulture Certificate.
I have a full, up to date DBS check (available for inspection).
Hourly rates and terms
My minimum booking is for a 1 hour period – this costs £20 full rate and £15 for OAPs and registered disabled.
You are not tied into a contract – if you want to book me regularly that’s great, but if you just need someone to come and do a bit of work now and again then that’s also fine.
I have set the Undergardener up as a limited company and you will be paying the company – so even if you want me to work for you every week for a year – you don’t have to worry about being my ’employer’ all the tax, national insurance and pensions are taken care of by my company.
Invoices for work done can be paid by cash, cheque or bank transfer.
To give you an idea of what you get
The first picture below is an overgrown drive way (just a spring-time’s worth of growth) the picture that follows is after 5 hours of work. This will give you some idea of what can be achieved – as you can see 5 hours isn’t quite enough to achieve perfection but it does make a difference. Of course a regular hour or so a week and the drive wouldn’t have been so overgrown in the first place!
What can I do for you and your garden?
- Digging and preparing beds for planting
- Planting out
- Staking and tieing
- Pruning and deadheading
- Mowing (but you have to provide the mower)
- Raking up leaves and general tidying
What I don’t do: tree surgery, hard landscaping (although happy to weed and maintain), ponds (beyond a little weed clearing or chopping back), work over 2m high
I’m keen to keep this planet habitable for human life and I’m sure that like me, living here in the flood zone, we all understand the threat of rising water levels! I’m also keen on biodiversity and would like to see the bees, butterflies and other wildlife thrive and survive.
So I don’t use pesticides, weedkillers, unsafe fertilisers and I try to compost and dispose of other waste in as an environmentally friendly way as possible.
My own garden has achieved the Gold Award in the last two years of the Wild Maidenhead Wild About Gardens Awards. I am experimenting with the latest environmentally friendly methods of fruit and veg production at my allotment and will be posting a series of blogs about these on this site.
Where possible I prefer to walk or cycle to work.
